Press Release - Broad Oak Sports College - 4th June 07

Broad Oak Sports College
PRESS RELEASE
Drafted: June 4th 2007

PUPILS PROGRESS THANKS TO HI-TECH SIR!

A virtual Sir is helping pupils at Broad Oak Sports College achieve significantly improved academic results! The Hazel Avenue school has been piloting an e-learning literacy support tool developed by specialist educational software publisher SiR Learning Systems Ltd.

Over 370 students aged between 11 and 14 have taken part in the pilot project which provides interactive learning programmes in support of the National Curriculum which are personalised according to each pupil’s needs. The results have been impressive with some 80 pupils securing a leap of over one year in their reading age and 70 students seeing their spelling age improve by the same margin.

“We are always keen to look at innovative new ways to assist pupils in fulfilling their academic potential and are excited by the great strides students have made using this software,” commented Broad Oak’s headteacher, Neil O’Connor. “Pupils these days are used to dealing with interactive electronic media and we’ve found this system really captures their imagination and aids their learning. In particular it assists middle ability students to achieve much improved scores which could make all the difference to their exam results”

The multi-media system develops comprehension, memory and listening skills by harnessing the latest computer technology and gives students and teachers immediate feedback on progress. It also supports different teaching and learning styles as part of an individualised programme which includes worksheets and homework assignments. The system is well suited to Broad Oak which has particularly strong IT provision with interactive whiteboards in every classroom and over 60 laptops available to pupils.

The success of the pilot project means the school will continue to use the software with its new intake this September set to benefit from its application. It is also trialling similar software that supports the maths curriculum and is achieving similarly impressive results
