Use of the Literacy Software as a part of an OILS

Which may include Global English, Asian Folk Tales, Active Books, Enid Blyton Books, World Fairy Tales and the Primary Reading Test.

N.B. These aims and outcomes are negotiable, but as they stand indicate the programme for the day.

Learning Objectives

  • to familiarise participants with the structure and function of the programmes
  • to demonstrate the links and advantages of the Discovery Management System
  • to consider integration into the curriculum and evaluation of the effects

Learning Outcomes

Awareness of:

  1. Global English, awareness of:
    • the external appearance and internal construction of Words, Sentences, Spelling and Rhymes
    • the variety of exercises in the programme
    • the educational philosophy behind the construction of the programme and exercises within it
  2. The Reading books
    • the content of the books including reading and exercises
    • the use of the books to extend and enhance the use of Global English
  3. Access into:
    • the automatic functioning of the software
    • the manual use of the management system
    • the Global English student profiles and the Reading Books results
Familiarity with the assessment procedures integral to the programme:

An understanding of:
  • the links with the Discovery Management System
  • the use of the software in the classroom
  • monitoring and evaluating the use of Global English and the Reading Books

Course Duration

1 day - where it has been preceded by half a day on the use of the Discovery Management System
11/2 days - to include use of the Discovery Management System
2 days - one initial and one follow-up day following several weeks usage. This is negotiated to suit individual needs

Maximum number of participants

Up to six people.

Resources required for Training Sessions

  1. A computer per participant with student and admin software, headphones and microphones.
  2. The materials provided with the software.
  3. A copy of the Discovery Management System training manual.

Other Associated Training Modules that can be provided

  1. The use of the Discovery Management System in delivering OILS.
  2. Flexible and resource based learning, and associated courses.
  3. Planning the implementation of software in the classroom.
  4. Project management.
