Use of the Discovery Management System in implementing an OILS

Learning Objectives

  • to enable participants to use the Discovery Management System as a student
  • to enable participants to use the Discovery Management System as an administrator
  • to indicate the potential of the Discovery Management System in the management of effective learning

Learning Outcomes

The ability to navigate through the Discovery Management System Student in order to access

  • the resources available
  • the feedback on progress
The ability to manipulate the administration system in order to
  • construct student records
  • form student groups
  • make curriculum workplans where appropriate
  • assign workplans to students
  • access student records
  • construct and access student profiles
  • construct and print out customised student or group reports
  • deal if appropriate with the support tools and configuration

Duration of Training Sessions

1/2 – 1day depending on the IT ‘literacy’ of the course participants.

Resources Required for Training Sessions

  1. Computers with the Discovery Management System and subject software installed
  2. Training guides
  3. A projection tablet if numbers are large, plus OHP and screen

Maximum number of participants

Ideally, the number of course participants will depend on the number of computers available – i.e. one person per machine. No more than two people to share a machine.

Other Associated Training Modules that can be provided

  1. Planning the implementation of software in the classroom.
  2. Areas in which the Discovery Management System is being used to deliver the curriculum –either whole school or departmental.
  3. Managing an evaluation project.
  4. The integration of OILS (subject specific) into the curriculum.
  5. The monitoring and evaluation of the use of OILS.
  6. Flexible and resource based learning (and associated courses).
